Our Yoga Styles

Beginner Level 1

Gentle Flow

Designed to get your foot through the yoga door, this class will gradually develop your strength and stretch through simple and slow yoga flows and transitions.

This is our easiest flow class. All levels welcome.

Yin

Yin is a wonderful complement to your strong ‘yang’ yoga practice. Learning how to slow down and really ‘be’ with our body is quite difficult. These classes are the perfect opportunity to do just that. A meditative, slow-paced practice that uses long, deep stretching to enhance joint mobility and flexibility, lengthening the muscles and fascia tissue. You can experience deep releases as you work through areas of the body that habitually hold tension and stress. Yin helps restore energy and calms the nervous system. All levels welcome, including beginners.

More About Yin

.

Yin + Jyoti

Jyoti is a sanskrit word meaning divine light. We begin with a meditative, slow-paced yin practice that uses long, deep stretching to enhance joint mobility and flexibility, lengthening the muscles and fascia tissue. Then through deep guided relaxation (yoga nidra), the body will completely relax so we can become increasingly aware of our divine inner light.

This practice is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness. Beneficial for all levels of ability.

Beginner Level 2

Foundation Flow

A more accessible class suitable for newer students or those wishing to get back to the basics. A slower sequence of postures that synchronizes breath with movement in order to build strength, balance, and flexibility. Refine your alignment and nurture your body. Beginner friendly, all levels welcome.

Yin + Roll

Combining the benefits of Yin and Roller Therapy to bring the body back to balance.

The rolling movements provide deep myofascial release, restoring the proper length-tension relationship to muscles and promoting a healthy recovery process for tight bodies and sport related activities.

Intermediate Level 1

Ashtanga Primary Level 1

Primary Series Led Class

An entry level Ashtanga class, with less jump backs/throughs. We skip most of the more difficult poses. This class allows you to experience and develop the Ashtanga rhythm with your body and breath.

A traditional, powerful vinyasa practice from Mysore India, comprised of a set series of postures linked mindfully with the breath to create tapas (burning heat), to purify and unite the body and mind.

The physical Ashtanga practice, conceived of by the remarkable 20th century yogi Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, was handed down to the late Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, who refined the sequence into what is commonly practiced today.

Some yoga experience is required.

More about Ashtanga

Core Flow

Expect to feel your abs! This class focuses on all things core – abdominals, obliques, lower back, hips, buttocks and thighs. Drawing on Power Flow sequencing we will concentrate on strength and stability in the mid section in order to develop an inner awareness of how to hold the body safely and correctly. Every now and then we may burst into an 80s abdominal section, working the abs through a sit-up sequence. Leg warmers and fluro tights optional 🙂

If you usually practice Foundation Flow you can still attend this class, do as much as you can, and rest when needed.

Hot Flow

Hot Flow is practised in a room heated between 30 and 35 degrees to warm up your muscles and joints, encourage blood flow and increase flexibility. We sequence this practice slower than Foundation Flow, with held postures and an emphasis on alignment. The heat intensifies the practice, aiding detoxification and deep cleansing.

* You may need two towels to this class: one to cover your mat, and one for your body.

Not suitable for pregnant women.

More About Hot Yoga

Slow Flow

Slow Flow develops strength and endurance. During this class we hold poses for longer, transitions between poses are slow and focused, and our breath pace is slower. Each moment of this practice is intentional and mindful as we become aware of the subtle movements within the body.

Some experience is necessary, just take breaks when you need to.

Intermediate Level 2

Ashtanga Primary Level 2

Primary Series Led Class

In this class you will practice the regular sequence up to where your individual practice takes you, including all jumpbacks/throughs, lifts etc. Even though it is a set sequence you are not required to complete them all, the teacher will let you know.

This is our most advanced class, yoga experience is essential.

More about Ashtanga

Power Flow

A dynamic and challenging sequence of flowing postures that synchronizes breath with movement (vinyasa) in order to build strength, balance, and flexibility. These classes allow you to explore a wide range of postures. You will be encouraged to step outside your comfort zone from time to time – a wonderful opportunity to challenge your body, your breath and your mind. Are you ready?

Meditation

Meditation Courses

Meditation is an important part of our personal practice. At Phoenix Yoga Studios we promote Mindful Awareness as the first step to turning inwards and becoming attuned to your thoughts and actions. Through this practice we begin to develop an understanding of our mental habits. We begin to see from our heart rather than from our ego. Our actions then start being of true benefit to ourselves and others.

Four and nine week courses.

Level 1 - Mindful Awareness

Level 2 - Mindful Thinking

Level 3 - Mindful Existence

Moving Meditation

Moving Meditation or ‘Freedom to Dance’ as we like to call it, is like a free form yoga class. In this practice we are not trying to show our best moves or learn any steps. We simply allow our mind to get out of the way and find a natural flow, an expression of who we are on the inside. A night out dancing to awesome beats, with no one other than yourself to impress – now that sounds great!

Last Friday of most months.
