What is Shirodhara?

The term ‘Shirodhara’ comes from two Sanskrit words, where ‘Shiro’ meaning ‘head,’ and ‘dhara’ which implies to the ‘pouring or sprinkling of something.’ In Ayurveda, these words infer the ‘dripping or pouring of warm ayurvedic oils on the forehead.’

The pouring of oil is from a specific height, for a specific time period in a continuous stream, allowing the oil to run through the scalp and down into the hair.

How Does Shirodhara Work?

Shirodhara works on multiple layers of the being. It is a deeply soothing sensation that goes to the hypothamlamus via the peripheral nerves.

The hypothalamus is located towards the centre of the brain. Its main function is to keep your body in a stable state called homeostasis. It does its job by directly influencing your autonomic nervous system or by managing hormones.

The relaxing feeling of the oil triggers the hypothalamus to balance and calm the body and mind, mitigating stress, expunging muscular tension, balancing doshic elements, relieving anxiety, depression, and mental fatigue.

If you feel burnt out due to overwhelming work pressure or struggle to cope with a personal event, a Shirodhara treatment can help you find peace and soothe your tense nerves.

Sanjay had his first Shirodhara treatment in Mysore, India in 2006.

Since then he has been studying and working to offer personal self-care options for his students.
