What is Shiatsu?


Shiatsu is a Japanese style of acupressure (finger pressure) massage. Shiatsu works with the body’s energy channels (meridians) to restore balance and integrity to the vital organs. The practitioner may use their thumbs, palms, elbows, knees, feet or body weight to help encourage the rise of energy and blood flow to the surface or to unblock stuck pathways. Shiatsu can be dynamic, gentle, firm, or soft, dependant on the need. It is often referred to as “the lazy man’s yoga” as the practitioner stretches, rotates and treats the clients’ limbs, torso and head in various positions. As there is a lot of bodily movement, from lying on the back, stomach and side position, the client is massaged on a floor based futon.

Shiatsu calms the nervous system down, which then reflects positively on the other systems.


Many ailments and conditions can be relieved with this form of treatment, such as:

What to expect

• You will be treated fully clothed, on a floor based futon. Please wear loose fitting clothes, such as a t-shirt and tracksuit pants or leggings – NO jeans or skirts. Also bring a clean pair of socks to wear.

• In addition to Shiatsu, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapies such as moxibustion or cupping may be used. Advice on complementary yoga postures, breath work, dietary and ongoing maintenance may also be given.

• It is best not to eat a heavy meal 2 hours prior to your treatment. Some fruit or a light snack beforehand is fine.

How will you feel

Shiatsu, always relaxing and soothing, enables you to let go of the conscious or unconscious “holding on” of pain, tension or emotion. However you do not have to have a complaint to benefit from Shiatsu. It works just as effectively as a “top up” for your general well being.
