Dedications and Offerings

Prayer

An important part of the philosophy at Phoenix Yoga Studios is the dedication or offering of our personal practice to others through prayer. This dedication is our way of praying for the benefit of all beings.

Coming from a deep heartfelt place we take our minds to those beings who are less fortunate, or suffering in some way and offer all the positive benefits that we feel from our practice to them.

Below are prayers which you can recite daily for someone whom you feel is in need, or to a group of people, animals, insects, or beings in other realms of existence. You can also pray for the happiness of beings you have never even met.

Do you have someone who you’d like us to pray for?

If you know of someone or a being whom you feel would benefit from a little extra positive energy, you can send an email to Sanjay requesting personal dedications and offerings. He will add this being to his daily prayers and at the end of classes. You may also ask for specific prayers that you may do yourself for the benefit of this being.

Shantideva’s Prayer

Shantideva is a Buddhist master from the monastic university of Nalanda, India who composed this prayer in the 8th century.

May all beings everywhere
Plagued by sufferings of body and mind
Obtain an ocean of happiness and joy
By virtue of my merits.

May no living creature suffer,
Commit evil, or ever fall ill.
May no one be afraid or belittled,
With a mind weighed down by depression.

May the blind see forms
And the deaf hear sounds,
May those whose bodies are worn with toil
Be restored on finding repose.

May the naked find clothing,
The hungry find food;
May the thirsty find water
And delicious drinks.

May the poor find wealth,
Those weak with sorrow find joy;
May the forlorn find hope,
Constant happiness, and prosperity.

May there be timely rains
And bountiful harvests;
May all medicines be effective
And wholesome prayers bear fruit.

May all who are sick and ill
Quickly be freed from their ailments.
Whatever diseases there are in the world,
May they never occur again.

May the frightened cease to be afraid
And those bound be freed;
May the powerless find power,
And may people think of benefiting each other.

For as long as space remains,
For as long as sentient beings remain,
Until then may I too remain
To dispel the miseries of the world.

Bodhisattva Prayer for Humanity

May I be a guard for those who need protection,
A guide for those on the path,
A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood.

May I be a lamp in the darkness,
A resting place for the weary,
A healing medicine for all who are sick,
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles.

And for the boundless multitudes of living beings
May I bring sustenance and awakening,
Enduring like the earth and sky,
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened.
