Supporting Nepal

Phoenix is currently raising funds to send to our favourite retreat centre in Nepal, Namo Buddha.

Ingrid (you can see her with the blonde hair and blue jacket) started this retreat a number of years ago with her late husband. As you may be aware, another spike in Covid-19 cases has resulted in lockdown and airport closure in Kathmandu. This means that once again her business cannot receive any guests – and of course not us!

Ingrid has managed to keep 28 staff employed since Covid-19 began, but she is using the last of her savings to support April’s payroll.

The Stats

Each of the 28 staff don’t receive government assistance and are relying upon Ingrid to support them and their families.

Each staff member is currently being paid only $3/day. It usually costs more than this to eat one meal at a cafe in Kathmandu. Imagine supporting your family on this!

We have raised $3500 so far!

Sanjay is working for free and donating his earnings for the month of May. And adding whatever Phoenix can afford to send.

wateraid

WaterAid

WaterAid started in 1981, resolutely focused on ending poverty and changing people’s lives for good through the three essentials of clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene.

They have reached 26 million people so far and only just getting started.

Phoenix is doing their best to assist this organisation through our annual Water Challenge in March, and in other donations.

who gives a crap

Who Gives A Crap

This company started when they learnt that 2.5 billion people (roughly 40% of the world’s population) don’t have access to a toilet. Poor sanitation causes diarrhoea related diseases that fill over half of sub-Saharan African hospital beds and kill 900 children under 5 every day. Luckily, toilets are proven to be a great solution—they provide dignity, health and an improved quality of life. And in case that wasn’t enough, it’s been shown that a dollar invested in sanitation yields eight dollars in increased economic prosperity.

As a result Who Give A Crap donate 50% of profits to WaterAid to build toilets in the developing world. They also only use 100% recycled paper in all of their toilet paper, meaning they’ve already saved thousands of trees and hundreds of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. These guys are home grown in Dandenong!
